Yogyakarta overview

Yogyakarta, which is found in south central Java, is one of the smallest provinces in Indonesia, but don't worry, it is so densely populated that you'll never notice. Yogyakarta is known as one of the cultural centres of Indonesia, as well as the centre for higher education, which means that culture junkies will find plenty to see and do. Yogyakarta is what is known as a special territory in Indonesia, being that it is still part of the old monarchy and has a Sultan, whose palace acts as the central figure of the city. There are plenty of displays of Javanese fine art including paintings, poetry, and ballet, and the city is also known for its traditional puppet shows. So besides being one of the few places left on earth where one can see a Sultan, Yogyakarta acts as one of the unique centres of Indonesian culture.
