Surabaya overview

Because of its status as the second largest city in the country, there is no shortage of things to do and see in Surabaya. Surabaya has some sights that are unique to the region, including the country's oldest zoo, where people can see some of the diverse ecosystem of Indonesia as it looks bored and sleeps behind glass. The city is also home to the largest mosque in East Java, as well as one of the nation's only mosques whose architecture reflects its Chinese builders. Like many cities in Indonesia, most of the sights revolve around temples and mosques, which are symbols of Indonesia's diverse cultural history. The city is also known for flooding, so during heavy rains, take cover as the poor sewage system fills the roads with a different type of culture during heavy storms.
