Semarang overview

Like most places in Indonesia, Semarang is hot, wet, beautiful and can be found on an island. Semarang is located on the northern part of the island of Java and stands as a testament to its diverse cultural past. The area has a wide variety of cultural influences, including both Chinese and European. This makes for an interesting array of Chinese temples, Muslim mosques, and Christian churches. Much of the architecture and structures of the city still reflect the influence of Dutch settlers including two Dutch aqueducts which protect the city from ending up underwater. Semarang is developing rapidly and is increasingly catering to foreign tourists and their money, which is evident by the construction of upscale shopping malls, hotels, and foreign grocery stores. One of the main attractions of Semarang is the Tugu Muda, which commemorates Indonesia's independence movement.
