Samarinda overview

Samarinda is located on the eastern part of the island of Borneo and is a city that is very representative of Indonesia in that rapid development has made for almost daily change in the environment. Samarinda is one of the hubs of the Indonesian logging industry so you can expect large amounts of air pollution from the slash and burn techniques that are still the favorite of Indonesian loggers. This progress has made for a fair amount of foreign investment which means Samarinda has some nice hotels and restaurants that cater to its developing tourist industry. Samarinda also acts as a gateway to some of less known parts of Indonesia, so if you are heading to places like Kutai Barat or East Kutai, you will likely pass through. Like most of Indonesia the weather is hot ranging to hotter and wet ranging to wetter.
