Palembang overview

This part of Indonesia is found on the murky banks of the Musi River and although often referred to as the ‘Venice of the East’, it lacks everything that Italy’s Venice boasts. Heavily populated and crazy-busy in the city centre, Palembang has some attraction well worth seeing and landmarks include Seberang Ilir, which is a cultural hub of activity, and Seberang Ulu, which is a large political centre. Ampera Bridge is a popular attraction here and there are three huge harbours worth seeing first thing in the morning when the fishermen bring in their nightly catches. If you need a breather, Palembang is the gateway to the idyllic Bangka-Belitung Islands.
