Bukittinggi overview

Bukittinggi may mean ‘high hill’ but it is a small town and easy to get around. The things to do are a little limited. There is a clock tower which is useful for telling the time and has a pretty roof; a trip to the Dutch Fort de Kock would be a nice diversion if there was anything left of it and a trip to Bundo Kanduang Park is a must if looking at a few depressed Orangutans and a moth eaten bear does it for you. Away from the town the Kuantan and the Anai rivers are just a couple in the area which offer good kayaking and rafting. Trekkers can climb various inactive volcanoes as well as Merapi which still has a bit of life in it. Those who didn’t like the look of the animals at the zoo in Bundo Kanduang should probably avoid the Tuesday night bullfights at nearby Padang Lawas.
