Bintan Island overview

Its close vicinity to Singapore has seen Bintan Island become an extremely popular tourist destination. As with its neighbour, Batam Island, there have been large investments in tourist resorts, parks and golf courses. Those visiting the island will still be able to search out some relatively unspoilt areas on the east coast, although the magnificent rainforest which once covered the island is now little more than a patch on the slopes of Bintan Besar, the island’s highest peak. Perhaps the Chinese were not far off when they named the island the ‘memory of a dream’. But for those who enjoy their water sports like diving, fishing, waterskiing and kayaking the island is a dream come true. Most of the major tourist centres are still based on the north of the island around Lagoi.
