Batam Island overview

It is of no surprise that Batam Island, being a 45-minute hop by ferry from Singapore, is a favourite destination with city dwellers in need of a break. No longer an island of sleepy fishing villages, Batam is the place where people go for tax-free cigarettes, cheap booze and to stock up on authentic Indonesian handicrafts. The Barelang swing bridges which connect the islands of Batam, Rempang and Galang (see where the name comes from?) are fun and there are numerous sandy beaches on which to top up a tan with endless opportunities for water sports. The fine dining on Batam is exceptional especially if there is a craving for sea food. The local delicacy ayam penyet or squashed chicken is to be found in eateries and on food stalls across the island.
