Anyer overview

Anyer is best known for its beach. White sands, diving and sunsets are all just a couple of hours drive from Jakarta. The remains of a lighthouse are a reminder that tsunamis are not new to this area. In 1883 legend has it that the wave caused when Krakatau exploded sent a piece of coral smashing into the lighthouse entirely obliterating it. The wave then went on to wash away the rest of Anyer and a new lighthouse was built in 1885 as a memorial to those who died. Anak Krakatau is what remains of the mighty Krakatau but is still an extremely active volcanic island. Some people think it’s a good idea to take a boat excursion for a closer look.
